Testimonials

"I found the policies and procedures are being adhered to and that all Osted requirements have been met. The unit is very well maintained and all staff I met today were very helpful and accommodating. They provided all files I requested with everything being well documented and organised. All in all a very good visit with great staff. I look forward to visiting again in the future.”

Nottingham City Placement Service

“To all the staff at Abbeyfield. I want to say a big thank you for all the time, effort, commitment and care you have given to this mother during her stay. I honestly do not think you could have done anymore and you gave her the best possible chance to learn to be a good mum. Unfortunately she was unable to make the grade, but it was not for lack of persistence on your part. I wish you all the best and many thanks again.”

Social Worker

Abbeyfield has changed our lives a hell of a lot for the better, it has given us the opportunity and tools to have a solid chance at being a family. Abbeyfield is a very friendly environment and staff are very good at letting us know what is happening and when. Abbeyfield has been a pleasant experience, we have really enjoyed it and it has given us the chance to be with our baby. Abbeyfield gives parents the opportunity to be better parents.

Abbeyfield

Introduction

Abbeyfield Residential Centre has been in operation for 14 years, offering high quality services for the families where there are concerns about the parent’s ability to provide good enough care to their children.

Facilities

Our facilities at Abbeyfield consist of six one bedroom apartments and four studio apartments. Each apartment has its own kitchen and bathroom. Two ground floor apartments have wheelchair and ramp access.

The layout of the centre has been designed to resemble that of a small community, whereby the apartments are situated around a small court yard.

Services

Four of our one bedroom apartments and two of our bedsits have full CCTV to allow parents deemed as high risk to be assessed and monitored whilst ensuring their children are safeguarded.

Communal areas consist of a meeting room, well equipped play room and garden. All of which are visible from the staff office. The stairwell and the grounds have CCTV. Each family is placed according to their family dynamics. We take time to explore each family’s circumstances to allow us to provide an environment in which their needs will be met.

Apartments are comfortable and decorated and designed to reflect what a family would expect in the community, supporting  every parent and child to reach their full potential and achieve social and economic well being.

Residential Family Assessment

Foundations Abbeyfield supports planned admissions and, if the assessment is positive, will promote a smooth transition for the family into the community. Keeping the family together, however, may not always be in the child’s best interests. If the child/children do not remain within the family, staff will support both parents and children during the process of separation, whilst ensuring the child’s needs are paramount.

Our Staff

Staff within our provision are responsive to the demands of the service, and its users. The team are diverse and act as positive role models. The complexity of the families is respected and clear plans are devised with families to include wishes and feelings.

Within the residential centre the outcome is evidenced, through observations to inform the assessment of parenting capacity. Each case is managed to meet the individual needs of the family. The support provided by staff is always focused upon the child and follows the guidelines of 'Every Child Matters'.

Each individual referral is carefully considered by the Social Work and Management Team and admission is based upon a comprehensive initial risk assessment.

Supervision and Monitoring

This is negotiated and agreed between the centre and local authority. All decisions are discussed and explained to the family, with written agreements in place.

In order to accommodate families where there are complex needs, the centre includes six individual apartments which are fully equipped with CCTV which provides full coverage of the living area.

Parenting is a complex and subjective topic. Often parenting styles are diverse and individual which makes the assessment of parenting such a difficult task.

With this in mind, PAMS has been developed to present complex information within a format that interfaces well within the Framework for the Assessment of Children in Need and their Families (DoH:2000) and the Common Assessment Framework (DfES:2006). Sue McGaw designed her parenting assessment manual, as a tool that can be used in order to look more closely at what is required for ‘good enough parenting’.

Social Workers and Experienced staff members at Progressive Care have been trained to undertake detailed parenting assessments using the PAMS assessment software. This can be delivered through our Residential Centres or within the Community.

The PAMS assessment covers childcare and development, behaviour management, independent living skills, safety and hygiene, parents’ health, relationships and support, and the impact of the environment and the community on parenting.

Each parenting skill is assessed for parental knowledge, quality of parenting skills and the frequency of parenting practice. By breaking these elements of parenting down into testable components PAMS begins to make an assessment of quality that is evidence based.

After the PAMS assessment has been completed it will provide a clear, visual family profile of functioning that targets both parenting support needs, as well as child protection issues. An easy to understand visual Child Profile and Parent Profile gives clear identification of the family strengths, needs and risks associated with their parenting.

If you would like to discuss a PAMS assessment or require further details, please do hesitate to contact us on referrals@progressivecare.co.uk
